By August 2007, market fears reached a critical mass that led to the first run on repo. This was exacerbated by the forced selling of underlying collateral, which in turn reinforced the cycle of declining asset values and increasing haircuts. Although some banks raised capital by issuing new securities in response, those efforts soon fell short because of slumping real estate, and mortgage, prices. Changes in the LIB-OIS spread represent counterparty risk, which is strongly correlated with changes in credit spreads and repo rates for securitized bonds.īased on their analysis, the authors hypothesize that when the subprime real estate market weakened early in 2007, repo market buyers grew anxious about the quality of the securitized assets in the bonds and the increasing haircuts on deals. That LIB-OIS spread is believed to be a proxy for fears about bank solvency. Among the market variables that they follow are ABX indices, which track the fundamentals of the subprime market, and the "LIB-OIS" spread, that is, the interest rate difference between the 3-month LIBOR (London Interbank Overnight Rate), which tracks the interest rate paid on unsecured interbank loans, and the overnight index swap (OIS) rate, which tracks the derivatives used in repo transactions. They track these market prices, over the period 2007-8. The authors study spreads on 392 securitized bonds and related assets that are typically used in repo transactions. The percentage earned by the investor on that collateral, which sometimes is made up of other securitized bonds, is analogous to the interest rate on a bank deposit it is known as the "repo rate." Typically, the total amount of the deposit will be somewhat less than the value of the underlying asset, with the difference called a "haircut." That liability forces banks to keep some fraction of their assets in reserve when they borrow money through the repo markets. Buyers of securitized bonds, often made up of mortgages, receive protection from the seller in the form of a repo agreement: the investor buys some asset representative of collateral from the bank for a set amount and the bank agrees to repurchase that same asset some time later at an agreed upon price. Morgan, and Bank of America, as a supplement to their traditional banking activities. Prior to the panic, securitized banking was a $12 trillion business practiced by the nation's largest investment houses, including Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, and Merrill Lynch, as well as by commercial banks such as Citigroup, J.P. 15223), they argue that securities created from loans that originated in the subprime mortgage market played a major role in inciting the event, but that ultimately it was the loss of liquidity at the firms that were the biggest players in the securitized banking system that led to the financial crisis. In Securitized Banking and the Run on Repo (NBER Working Paper No. The authors define "securitized banking" as the creation of structured bonds from bank loans, such as mortgages, which are then used as collateral for repo. Repo is a form of banking in which firms and institutional investors "deposit" money, by lending for interest, short term, and receive collateral as a guarantee. The financial panic of 2007-8 stemmed from a run on the repurchase or "repo" market - the primary source of funds for the securitized banking system - rather than a run on monetary deposits as in earlier banking panics, according to a recent study by Gary Gorton and Andrew Metrick. Their plots sow discord within the temple, and what happens next will change Rozemyne’s future forever. As the High Bishop, she eventually has to travel through the Central District for the Harvest Festival, and in the midst of all this, she even gets her first little sister.īut as everyone prepares for winter, the political struggle between nobles intensifies. Her joy leads to a flurry of activity as she pours her all into advancing the paper-making industry and gathering more support, all so that she can create a world with more books for her to read. With it, she and Ferdinand can brew a potent potion known as a jureve, the power of which will finally make her a normal, healthy girl! Well, probably. Rozemyne now only needs the ruelle fruit she failed to gather last year. This is another action-packed volume of this biblio-fantasy, where the Saint of Ehrenfest overcomes a winter of mysticism and battle! Including two lengthy short stories and a four-panel manga drawn by You Shiina! Her love for books keeps growing, and the mana within her is likewise becoming progressively stronger! She must hunt the Lord of Winter with the Knight's Order, then gather ingredients for her jureve potion during Spring Prayer. Her influence in both noble society and the temple is increasing steadily, and her squad of Gutenbergs work on improving the printing press while she sells picture books in the castle. With her hands full teaching kids too young for the Royal Academy and even tutoring guard knights with bad grades, she's incomparably busier than last year. In the midst of an approaching winter, Rozemyne the High Bishop is traveling between the temple and castle more than ever, participating in noble society, the baptism ceremony, and the Dedication Ritual. This journal is perfect for a summer road trip! It comes with designs you can cut out and paste into your journal (like a camera, compass and tepee, for example). The animated move “Up” is one of my favorite travel films, so of course I had to include this journal to the list! I like that it’s a hardcover, which means it’s less likely to get damaged during my adventures. It also comes with an envelope in the back labeled “Travel Treasures” for storing little travel keepsakes. You can plot your course using little pins and colored string. This is a cute idea and ideal for those about to embark on a round-the-world trip. Just looking at this journal makes me want to fly to Tahiti or take a cross-Atlantic cruiseliner to London. In it are dares like “Go to a bar or movie alone today” or “Go outside your hairstyle comfort zone”.Īnother vintage-looking gem that harkens back to the day when people traveled with travel trunks adorned with vacation destination stickers. The journal includes writing prompts for those that need a little encouragement to start writing as well as a list of daily challenges it calls “fear-facing prompts”. This journal features one of my favorite quotes by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Do one thing every day that scares you journal There are also several maps in the book as well. Get it? Okay, maybe I’m just slow…Īnyway, the journal has both graph paper AND sketch paper which can come in handy for those who’d rather illustrate their bucket lists than write them. It took me a minute to grasp why this journal had a bucket pictured on it and then I was like ohhhh. The pages aren’t lined so this journal can double as a sketchbook. Compass “Not All Who Wander are Lost” JournalĪ great quote from JRR Tolkien and another vintage-looking journal, this one made from real leather. You can order it with blank or lined pages and the diary opens flat, making it easy to write in.ģ. It reminds me of something Marco Polo or Christopher Columbus might have journaled in. The leather isn’t real and the key is just a decoration (sewn onto the cover) but that’s okay, it still looks vintage which is all the matters. This journal gets bonus points for being a spiral notebook which takes me back to the 5th grade when when all of my journals will filled with cheesy flower poems that rhymed and R.L. Cute Map JournalĪs you know, I’m a sucker for anything with a map on it. I had to hunt far and wide…to the most obscure places of the internet…but I finally found some (see how much I love you, dear blog readers? I went the extra mile here. That said, most journals are pretty plain-looking and it actually took a while for me to come up with a list of nine journals I thought were worthy of this list. It’s nice to have somewhere private to record my personal thoughts and the unblog-worthy details of my trips. Plus, for all the oversharing I do on this blog, there’s actually a lot I don’t reveal on here (you’ll have to wait until the memoir comes out to hear the dirty details, ha). Although I love travel blogging (duh! I’ve been doing it for seven years now!), sometimes it’s nice to record my adventures like it’s 1999 and go low tech with an old timey journal. Ayase and Hinana’s relationship develops naturally. It was certainly intentionally in production, but in execution is felt totally natural that things don’t really pick up until the very end. There was a bit of skirting around the issue though. However, it’s actually addressed in a factual manner within the story without being forced either. I had that awkward feeling in my stomach of ‘wow, this film is really well directed and written but this age-gap is incredibly off-putting no matter how you spin it’. There was an age gap, and it’s brought up fairly early on. I won’t lie, I daydreamed a bit as I drove home, if I would ever find someone like that to sweep me off my feet.Īll the romantic flair of this romance was saddled in a fair amount of reality. They really managed to add in that wistful ‘I wish that would happen to me’ flavor. The impromptu dates and Cinderella moments were straight out of the fairy tales. The way the chance meetings were set up, felt very truly by chance with that shojo charm to them. All the original instances of slow burn romances started. I gotta say, I was pretty damn blown away from how this film handled it’s plot. However, this prince isn’t as picture perfect as expected, but that doesn’t stop a romance from flourishing. This is where she truly has her chance encounter with a real prince, Ayase Kaede (Katayose Ryota). Due to her position as a student council member, she is asked with the other members to be extras when a movie is being filmed at her school. Hinana has one, tiny secret she dreams of being swept away by a prince charming like in her romantic black and white films. She gets good grades, takes care of her younger sister, and is relatively active in school. Hanazawa Hinana (Hashimoto Kanna) is your average high school girl, who leads a very common life. Click here to get a print copy. So, let’s talk about the basic premise first. This story appears in the December 2017 issue of Otaku USA Magazine. The secondary characters aren’t as strong as the main pair, but despite this, Kiss Me at the Stroke of Midnight is a cute romantic romp promising some good laughs and, hopefully, the happy ending of Hinana’s dreams. It’s a lot to put in a manga without coming off as cheesy but Mikimoto accomplishes it with skill and finesse. Inspired by an experience Mikimoto had when one of her own manga was turned into a movie, this is both a modern-day Cinderella story and an exploration of the idea that while celebrities may be beautiful, they are also human beings like the rest of us. The first volume is packed with twists and turns, most of which are pretty predictable, but the characters’ charm carries the story. The refined artwork is accompanied by capable storytelling and a sardonic sense of humor. The characters are delightfully expressive even if the chibis hover somewhere over the uncanny valley. Mikimoto’s art is really sweet and beautifully polished. After a misunderstanding with Kaede’s manager, Hinana is banished from the production and she thinks her fairy tale is over. Despite his flaws, Hinana also sees someone genuinely interested in filmmaking and serious about his craft. It turns out her celebrity crush has feet of clay and a butt fetish worthy of Tina Belcher. The gorgeous Kaede is everything Hinana hoped for … until she actually meets him. The idol Kaede, fresh from breaking up with his band, is filming a movie at Hinana’s school and it only takes a little prodding for Hinana to volunteer as an extra. One day her chance to meet a real live prince arrives. On her off days she haunts an out-of-the-way movie theater and immerses herself in the classics like Roman Holiday. Her one desire is for a fairy tale romance with a hot prince. Everyone around her thinks of her as a smart and serious high school girl, but Hinana is hiding a secret love of romance. Every day she gets up at the same time and follows the same routine, morning to night. The title may be a mouthful, but the plot is fast and amusing. Cinderella gets a modern makeover in this light-hearted romantic comedy. Cleveland only allowed Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota to complete seven passes, but it also allowed him to extend plays with his legs. The Browns might have still been able to win despite their unfavorable offensive game plan had they done a better job defensively. Myles Garrett (Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images) The Browns need to focus on what they do best moving forward, and that's running the football. It was Atlanta that leaned on the run late, rising Cordarelle Patterson and rookie Tyler Allgeier to notch a fourth-quarter touchdown and two field goals while limiting Cleveland's opportunities. However, he isn't capable of playing at a high level consistently.Īgainst the Falcons, Brissett was 21-of-25 for 234 yards and his second game-ending interception of the season. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett played nearly perfect ball against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2, finishing with 220 passing yards and two touchdowns. This was not the right game plan against an Atlanta team that also wants to run the ball. The Browns had an exact 50-50 split between runs (35) and passes on Sunday. What's surprising is that Cleveland didn't lean on the run even more. Nick Chubb led the charge with 118 yards on 19 carries, while Kareem Hunt chipped in 49 yards on 10 carries. The Browns did a great job on the ground against Atlanta, averaging 5.1 yards per carry and racking up 177 total yards. Nick Chubb (John Adams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Here are our three biggest takeaways from Cleveland's loss to Atlanta. This is a game that Cleveland probably should have won, much like their Week 2 outing against the New York Jets.īut the Browns are what we largely expected without Watson, a. Miscues, like a David Njoku fumble that led to a Falcons touchdown, cost the Browns in a game where they dominated on the ground and in time of possession (35:44). However, that strategy requires nearly flawless football, and the Browns didn't get that on Sunday. The Browns (2-2) remain tied for first place in the AFC North, but Sunday's loss suggests that Cleveland probably isn't a legitimate contender this year.Ĭleveland awaits the eventual debut of Deshaun Watson-who was suspended for 11 games after 24 lawsuits were filed against him by women accusing him of sexual assault or misconduct-and they're looking to lean on their defense and ground game in the interim. The Cleveland Browns lost their second game of the season on Sunday, dropping a 23-20 contest to the Atlanta Falcons. Depending to where you stand on Suárez this was either a blatant dive and a piece of cheating the referee should have spotted, or it was a clumsy challenge by the goalkeeper that was practically asking for trouble. It was a similar scenario at Anfield on Saturday when Luis Suárez went down for his penalty. The bottom line is that there might not always be a right and wrong, there are some instances where it is impossible to make a decision that is wholly correct. What then? In the end it comes down to a matter of opinion – you can see both sides of the argument but actually deciding what is right and wrong will vary according to different referees and different situations. After a few television replays the consensus seemed to be that Newcastle had been a little unlucky and perhaps deserved the benefit of the doubt, but the referee did not have those replays to hand.Īnd even if he had, supposing one of the attackers had been standing two feet closer to Joe Hart. How on earth were the match officials supposed to work out, given the speed of the shot and the suddenness of the strike, whether any or all of the three Newcastle players caught in offside positions were impeding or distracting the goalkeeper? The referee could only make one decision or the other, and whatever he decided one team was going to be mightily aggrieved. Take Cheik Tioté's disallowed goal for Newcastle United against Manchester City a couple of weeks ago. Rugby followers might enjoy discussions and debates over how hard you have to hit someone to deserve a straight red card but that does not mean the concept transfers easily to football, where there are already too many grey areas when no one is quite sure whether the referee has got it right or wrong. Maybe football referees would not be such pushovers, yet at the very least a sin-bin option would introduce another area of doubt, another subjective decision for the already overloaded official to make. The thinking was that players would soon cut out the transgressions once they knew they could be sent off the field for 10 minutes but, as you can see, referees were soon using the sin-bin for completely different purposes. While that is perhaps an extreme example, bear in mind that sin-bins were initially introduced in rugby league to deal with technical infringements such as persistent offside or scrum feeding, offences that irritated opponents and spectators but did not necessarily warrant the award of a penalty and therefore a points scoring opportunity. That's what happened in rugby, and if you would like to see it in action check out this clip complete with priceless commentary, from a game almost 20 years ago. Inevitably, the option of sending a player to the cooler for a specified length of time would come to be used as a cop-out by referees, an easy option.
